What Is Credit Card Debt Consolidation?

by - Elizabeth Bean

Credit cards are often offered to college students who have no means to pay them back. This sends a bad signal to the young consumer who may or may not already have bad ideas about money and how to spend it. This can lead to a lifetime of charging items when no means of payment are available. Even worse, people with this bad habit tend to get a new credit card when they are having problems paying off the old one. They end up under debt and wondering what went wrong. When this happens, credit card debt consolidation might be the only thing that keeps someone out of bankruptcy.

The first thing anyone considering credit card debt consolidation should do is stop using the credit cards. This might be easier than it seems, but for some, this will create a huge hole in their life. Cut them up if you have to. You can not pay off old debt while racking up new without expecting to end up in trouble again. When you sign up for help, the company that helps you will probably insist that you stop using them anyway, or they won’t sign you up for help. You must resist new offers that may come in the mail as well.

The next step will depend on who you see and what type of problem you really have. If you just have a few cards, the company might set up lower interest rates for you, and you can then enjoy lower payments as long as you make them on time. Others might take all of your payments, lump them into one amount, and secure a loan for you to pay them off all at once. You are then left with one payment a month that will most likely have a lower interest rate than you ever dreamed of having on your credit card accounts.

Don’t expect credit card debt consolidation to clear up your credit nightmares all at once. It is going to take some time, but it is probably something you can not do on your own. Use the time to rethink your spending habits, and decide what you think is best for you and your family. You may have dreams that you have to pay for, and you should put them above things like shopping sprees for clothes you really don’t need, or buying the latest and largest television. Think about your family goals, and learn new spending habits while you pay off your old debt. You will be glad that you did.
